Ain’t Whistlin' Dixie: Director's Vision

Zeke Taylor’s an American Rockabilly/Swing rock star with a career on the downslide. He’s studied and is fascinated by Asian Cultures and Marshall Arts. Zeke just left a meeting with his personal manager who has stated that his career is waning. The manager has suggested, "Since you are enthralled by Asian Culture it would be a great opportunity to rebuild your career in Japan." "All too many American stars who have been on the decline have made great comeback’s by spending time in Tokyo." Zeke doesn’t know what his next move will be.

After much reflection Zeke realizes his only option is to take the manager’s advice and go to Japan.

Now in Tokyo, Zeke is introduced to several washed-up musicians. He meets and adheres to an American guitarist, an Australian bassist, and a drummer from Jamaica. This unusual group of musician’s bond and spend much time hangin’ out in Tokyo’s underground bar/dance club scene where they play music and work on re-making a name for themselves. Zeke spends his days studying Japanese language and enrolls in a Kendo school for Japanese sword fighting.

Kyoko is a beautiful woman of Japanese female characteristics, shy, subservient, seemingly innocent and pure. She spends her evenings sitting alone at the same table at the Swing club called "The Jumpin’ Joint." Zeke’s band, The Swingin’ Kings are the regular club act at The Jumpin’ Joint. Time and again Zeke croons and the band rocks but Kyoko never looks up from her book which she intently studies the subject of English. Although the club crowd has the hottest swing dancers, the coolest crowd in town and Zeke is the envious idol he can’t get Kyoko to pay him any mind.

Days pass and there is nothing he can do to get her to acknowledge his existence. "I got chicks to the left of me." "Chicks to the right of me." "I got chicks all around me." "But I ain’t got you." She completely ignores any of his attempts to get any reaction out of her. He returns to the stage and sings one last number exclusively to her, leaving the stage once again crooning the song; It’s Only Make Believe. Frustrated he returns to the bright lights of the stage. The song ends and the crazy crowd’s yellin’ for more. "Thank you very much." "You’re too kind." "We’re going to take a short break and return shortly." Piqued, Zeke returns to Kyoko’s table and puts out her cigarette. "You know the Surgeon General has determined that cigarette smoking sucks." She still does not acknowledge his presence.

He storms off back to his cronies who themselves has a table and entourage of groupie chicks.

At this point four drunken idiot marines are completely out of hand. They’re boisterous and insolent behavior really goes too far when they start to pick on a couple of young Japanese men. Zeke has seen enough and he steps in… "And so it was written the superior warrior fights from the standing position." BAM! He kicks all four of their asses very abruptly and matter of fact."

Zeke returns to the stage and starts the next set of music and finally Kyoko manages to look up past her book and glances toward Zeke.

The next night Zeke returns to the mic and sings a song to Kyoko in Japanese. She looks up from her book and sadly smiles at him. He’s taken back. He walks over to her table and in Japanese he replies, "Finally a connection." Pleasantly surprised she replies, "You speak Japanese?"

They hit off and begin to spend a lot of time together. Zeke spends time talking about his dreams and his past. Kyoko does not reveal much about herself. She appears very reserved. They spend their time learning and comparing the diversity of each other’s culture but Kyoko does not reveal much about her personal life.

Kyoko tells Zeke of places she wishes to take him. "Kyoto, the city of a thousand temples." She takes him on a train to Kyoto and they spend the day visiting temples and enjoying each other’s company. Knowing his love of the Marshall Arts she tells him of a surprise she has for him. Kyoko takes him to a master sword smith where a brand new sword he has hand crafted has been completed for Zeke. Kyoko presents him his new gift. He begins to perform a Marshal Arts routine with his sword. His style is very impressive. When Zeke finishes the surprised Kyoko and the sword master applaud. Zeke takes a bow.

Back to Tokyo.

On one occasion they are eating in a restaurant and Zeke sticks his chopsticks in his bowl of rice. Kyoko admonishes him and explains. "You mustn’t do that." "In Japan that is very disrespectful." "Why?" "This is only done as a Buddhist ritual for someone who has passed away." She reaches over and lifts his bottle and begins to fill his glass. He stops her. "In America that’s just not done." "Why?" "Because in America gentlemen always fills a ladies glass." He lifts her bottle and fills her glass. They exchange warm smiles.

This table/dinner conversation is a simple east-meets-west cultural clash to show the difference of philosophies and habits. (It is very important to understand that one of the underlying subtext of this film is to be honorable to both cultures.) At this point of the evening Kyoko watches a group of men enter the restaurant. She nervously tries to hide herself and observes as these men are ushered to a table. "May I be excused please." Without another word being said she gets up and leaves. Zeke waits and waits, she never returns.

The next night Zeke is back onstage and Kyoko’s is no where to be found. All night her table remains empty. Later the same evening after the club closes the boys in the band are going out on the town. "Hey man, Zeke hold your head up." "We’re all going out on the town and rage." "C’mon." "Not tonight, I just want to go for a walk." The boys split and Zeke walks alone dejected, vanishing into the neon jungle of the Tokyo nightlife.

Suddenly, from across the bustling street Zeke notices a woman that appears to be Kyoko. She is being escorted to a brand new black Mercedes limo. The oldest man with her is inebriated and slurring in Japanese a body language that assures us of his sexual intentions. He sleazily plays with a piece of rope running it over her body. It’s obvious the other men with this elderly man are his bodyguard. Four Yakuza types. It appears that Kyoko is in some type of trouble. Zeke shouts, "Kyoko." No response. It is apparent that she hears her name shouted and she recognizes the voice. She does not acknowledge him. "Kyoko." She is ushered into the vehicle and it pulls away. Zeke runs toward the vehicle as it slowly moves through the crowded streets. "Kyoko." Zeke runs over cars, pushes his way through the crowded streets attempting to make his way to the Benz. As he closes in on the vehicle he sees that her hands are bound in an artistic web of rope just as a ball gag is being placed in her mouth. The car makes a quick turn disappearing down a street. As Zeke reaches the street and the vehicle is gone from view Zeke shouts again, "Kyoko."

Zeke spots an officer directing traffic and frantically runs to him. "A girl, she has been kidnapped." "A girl kidnapped?" Zeke tries to speak Japanese but his excited state leaves him almost speechless. The officer pulls out a pad and begins to take notes. The traffic quickly gets out of hand. "What is this girls name?" "Kyoko." "She is very beautiful." "Kyoko?" "Just Kyoko?" "What is her full name." "I don’t know." "Where does she live?" "I don’t know the address." "A girl has been kidnapped." "You don’t know where she lives." "And you don’t know her full name." "Do you know how many beautiful girls there are named Kyoko here in the center of Shinjuku?" Zeke is left speechless as the officer returns to directing the traffic.

At this point Zeke takes off running back down the street to where he know his friends will be. In a heightened stated, "You guys got to help me." "It’s Kyoko, something wrong." "She’s been kidnapped." "What are you talking about?" "This is Japan not LA." "Have a drink and calm yourself." "I’m telling you it was Kyoko." "How do you know it was her?" "It could have been almost anyone." Zeke is left perplexed. "You need to get your mind off of this girl." "What’s gotten over you anyway?" "First she snubs you completely." "And then she leaves you hanging high and dry." "You’re all hung up over this one chick." "Take a look at what surrounds you."

Later the same night a worried Zeke finds himself waiting for Kyoko outside of her door. Seemingly hours later the black Mercedes pulls up and Kyoko steps from the car. She does not notice Zeke until she pulls her key and gets ready to enter her apartment. "Kyoko." "You must not come here again." "You mustn’t come here." "I cannot see you anymore." "I was worried sick about you." "Where have you been?" "I thought I saw you..." "I thought I saw you being kidnapped." "You must go now." "Please." She steps into her apartment and closes the door.

The next day Zeke leaves several messages for Kyoko to call him on her answering machine. She does not reply. The camera pans the empty room of Kyoko. It reveals some suggestive subtle clues into the private life of Kyoko.

Cut to:

Zeke sipping Saki with the boys. "Chicks, they’re all the same." "Man, I feel like such a fool." "Here I was going out of my mind over her and for what? "Zeke, it’s high time you forgot about this one chick." "Let’s go party." "Party!" They exit into the street.

In a drunken stupor the boys stumble along the city streets. They find a colorful flier advertising a club. "Hey, let’s check out this place." They find themselves entering the club advertised on the flier. Once inside they realize they have stepped into a place that specializes in sexual fantasies. A strange character introduces himself to them. "Americans, you come with me." "I show you the time of your life."

The boys are led through a myriad of a bizarre and twisted world of sex and deviant nightlife. One man is tied to a cross, while a woman in a nun’s outfit beats him with a cat of nine tails. A beautiful woman with long flowing hair with breasts revealed walks past the boys. She is wearing a strap on dildo. In another room a Japanese schoolgirl is receiving her lesson for the day. Another room reveals a well-endowed nurse leading a customer into an examining room. The boys are speechless at this point. Some young girls who are knockouts smile at the boys as they continue on their journey.

The boys are lead into a large room. There are three colorful doors that look like the game show, Let’s Make A Deal. "Which one of you fine American men want to have a go at this?" The boys prod Zeke forward. "Take a chance." "Pick one of these doors and enter at your own risk." Zeke scoffs and points to door number two. It opens of its own accord. The boys howl. The strange looking character pushes Zeke into the entry of the door. The door closes.

Zeke finds himself in a dark room unable to see anything. He stumbles forward and his eyes begin to adjust. He sees something that is suspended in mid air in front of him. The lights slowly focus and it is a woman suspended by ropes, in sexy black lingerie. She is bound in an artistic and suggestive position and blindfolded.

"My my, someone fetch a priest." He moves toward her ear. "You can’t say no to the beauty and the beast." His index finger begins to trace down her forehead to her eyes. The blindfold slips down revealing barely her eyes. His finger moves down ever so slowly toward her neck and past her breasts to her stomach. She slightly gasps in anticipation.

"There is this old American saying." "A guy walks over to a beautiful woman who is sitting alone on a park bench." "He sits down next to her and eventually moves closer." "He puts his hand on her stomach." "Startled she moves away." "PLEASE!" "She cried." (His finger moves from her belly button downward her thigh. "After a while he moves in again." "DON’T!" "She cries as he touches her thighs." "He waits and moves in ever so much closer and slides his hands down to feet." "STOP!" " She cries aloud." (As Zeke stops touching her feet he moves silently back toward her head and slowly puts his lips to her ear once again.) "It didn’t take long… " (He moves to the other ear.) " Before he realized what she really meant." "What she really wanted." (The woman gasps.) "Please, Don’t Stop."

He kisses her cheek and then softly bites it working his way to her feet with soft and erotic bites. He begins to bite inside of her legs up toward her inner thighs. A close-up reveals tears beginning to well up in the corners of the woman’s eyes. "No." "Stop." "Please." Zeke stops. He recognizes the voice. He stands up and removes the blindfold completely. It’s Kyoko. His look of shock says more than words could ever say. Kyoko turns her face away and begins to cry softly. Zeke storms off.

Dissolve:

We find Zeke packing his bags. He’s had enough of Tokyo. The door to his place is open and Kyoko walks in. He doesn’t want to hear a word she has to say. As he continues to pack his clothing Kyoko begins to tell him of her life and how she came to work in this place. "I was young." "I wanted to study in college but my parents could not afford to send me to school." "I borrowed the money from the Yakuza." "The payments kept going up and up." "I could not get enough money to pay him back." "The Yakuza told me that if I could not pay back my debt, that my parents must pay." "I did not want my parents to know what I had done." "My father is a hard working man." "A proud man." "I could not shame him in this way." "I wanted to tell you of this." "But I knew not how and there is no way out for me now." The Yakuza enters with some of his thugs. He speaks to Kyoko. She answers back timidly. He begins to speak more roughly. Kyoko nods her head submissively and looks back at Zeke. She starts toward the door. Zeke stops her. "What are you doing?" "You don’t have to go with these jerks." "You’re not a slave." He looks sternly at the Yakuza. "The best knot uses no rope." "And no one can untie it." "Thus the master is always good at saving people." "And does not abandon anyone." He turns to Kyoko. "You can do anything you please." "They do not own you." "Zeke, you don’t understand." "If I don’t go these men will hurt you." Zeke pulls his sword that Kyoko gave him and points it at the Yakuza. "Well then let’s rock ‘n’ roll." The thugs step forward but the Yakuza gestures for them to keep their ground and he simply smiles at Zeke. He accepts his challenge and exits.

"Zeke, this is no game." "These men will kill you. Zeke picks up the phone. "I need a taxi." "You’re coming with me."

The taxi arrives and Zeke and Kyoko exit the building and hurriedly enter the cab. The taxi pulls away as Zeke tells the driver to take them to Narreta Airport. The cab turns down a street and stops. The cabs path is blocked by a Mercedes Limo. Suddenly many Black Limos pull in behind and all around them. They are surrounded amidst a sea of black Mercedes Sedans. The cabby becomes very concerned as the doors open to each of the Sedans. A wave of Yakuza slowly converge on the taxi. The cabby speaks aloud to himself. (A Shinto prayer.) He turns to Zeke. "Get out of my car you fuckin’ fuck." "Get out." "Get out." Before he can exit the door swings open abruptly and Zeke is yanked out of the cab. There are too many guns drawn for him to resist. The door swings open of the Mercedes, which directly blocks the path of the taxi. The head Yakuza does not even look toward Zeke or Kyoko. She knows to enter the vehicle and does. The car pulls away. The Yakuza warrior closest to Zeke pulls the gun away as if to say. It’s over and he smiles at Zeke and then pistol-whips him in the head with the gun.

Zeke awakes in a pile of fish carcasses. He has a gash in his forehead. He stumbles out of the fish trash pile of the fish market. The frantic fish selling and bartering continue as Zeke stumbles to his feet. He groggily walks away as fish are being sold and tossed every which way to the highest bidder.

He goes to his apartment and it is totally trashed. He grabs his sword out of its scabbard and heads off to find Kyoko.

Cut to:

The club.

Zeke patiently enters the club. The manager gets on a portable phone and places a call to the Yakuza. Zeke moves from room to room searching for Kyoko. The Yakuza arrive and Zeke begins to take out anyone who gets in his way of his mission to find Kyoko. With his blood stained sword he finds Kyoko who is bound on a table and having Japanese calligraphy painted all over her body with black ink by the Yakuza leader. (Cut back and forth between the sword fighting and the painting.) The Yakuza is naked except for his sumo type underwear garment. Tattoos adorn his entire body. He also has one of his fingers cut off.

Zeke enters the room and with blinding speed and animal rage cuts the ropes that bound Kyoko. He then points the sword at the Yakuza’s throat and forces him to exit the room backward. (The Yakuza backs out of the room with that same sinister smile on his face.) Zeke exits the club with Kyoko and the Yakuza. "Kyoko can you drive?" "I have never learned." "No time like the present." Kyoko gets in the driver seat. They enter a vehicle and it surges forward. (Tires screeching.) The erratically driven vehicle comes to a halt at the end of the street. The Yakuza is forced out of the car and it tears off again.

A bunch of Yakuza speed down the street after them. The first car stops and picks up the head Yakuza. As the chase ensues through the streets of Tokyo. (The car driven by a woman who has never driven a car before.) In the midst of the chase they end up trapped in a shipping yard with welders working, sparks flying.

There is no escape. Four Yakuza pulls out swords and walk up to Zeke. A sword battles ensues and he takes them all out swiftly. The sound of one man clapping his hands together is heard. The head Yakuza is impressed. The Yakuza’s head henchmen cover him with a robe deliberately taking their time. The Yakuza is handed a sword and points the sword at Zeke. "Let’s rock ‘n’ roll."

A sword battle ensues between Zeke and the Yakuza. Both opponents are injured as the sound of clashing swords smash together again and again.

The Yakuza has his sword knocked out of his hand as he is driven to his knees. For a brief moment it appears Zeke may deliver the final blow. As he raises the sword high above his head the Yakuza bows down to honorably accept the deathblow. Zeke steps back, lowering his sword and walks away with Kyoko. The remaining Yakuza men part leaving a path for them to leave.

Cut to:

Zeke and Kyoko getting married in a Japanese traditional wedding.
